The Lagos State Government has raised concerns about the quality of borehole water being consumed in the Lekki area, warning that it may be contaminated with untreated waste.
Mahmood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, made this known during a recent stakeholders’ meeting. He explained that many residents who drill boreholes in the area could be unknowingly consuming polluted water due to improper wastewater management.
“Everyone drilling boreholes within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I would describe as ‘contaminated water,’” Adegbite stated. “If we are able to properly treat all the wastewater in this axis just as the government has planned, it would help eliminate potential health risks and prevent the spread of diseases.”
He emphasized the importance of wastewater treatment in safeguarding public health and stressed the need for collective responsibility in environmental management.
Addressing the broader issue of flooding in the state, Adegbite acknowledged the ongoing challenges. “It rained heavily yesterday, which is unusual for the August break. This shows how complex the climate issues we face are,” he said.
“Despite significant investments already made, much more still needs to be done to effectively tackle flooding across Lagos,” he added.
The state government continues to call for public cooperation as it intensifies efforts to improve water safety and drainage infrastructure.
