The Lagos State Government has taken a significant step towards improving road safety by directing all courier and delivery service providers in the state to ensure their riders wear reflective jackets and use visibility tapes during evening and night-time operations.
According to a statement signed by the Ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlola, the directive was issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa.
It was noted that “all riders operating between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. must wear reflective jackets, while all delivery motorcycles and bicycles must be fitted with reflective tapes or markers to ensure clear visibility on the road”.
The Ministry has warned that delivery companies must sensitise their riders and ensure strict compliance or risk sanctions from enforcement agencies such as the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and the Vehicle Inspection Service.
In a swift response, Glovo Nigeria, a leading delivery service provider in Lagos, has pledged to comply with the new safety directive.
The company’s General Manager, Mr. Lamide Akinola, commended the state government for prioritising the safety of riders and other road users.
“We are encouraging other delivery service providers in the state to follow suit,” he said, adding that Glovo would provide 3,000 reflective vests free of charge to its couriers within the next month.
The Ministry of Transportation has welcomed Glovo’s gesture, describing it as a sign of partnership between the government and service providers in building a safer, more responsible delivery system across Lagos State.
