The Lagos State Government has issued a strong warning to residents living in flood-prone areas of Lekki and Ikorodu, urging them to relocate immediately for their safety.
This comes after continuous rainfall over the past few days caused water levels to rise, leading to serious flooding in some parts of the state.
The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement during a press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja. He stressed that people living in low-lying areas should not ignore the danger signs.
“The rains have become more intense, and we are seeing unusual water levels. We advise residents in flood-prone zones like parts of Lekki and Ikorodu to move out now. Do not wait until it is too late,” Wahab said.
He added that emergency response teams are on high alert and ready to assist affected residents.
Many areas in Lagos have already experienced flooded streets, submerged cars, and disrupted daily activities. Several residents have taken to social media to share videos of their homes being flooded and properties being damaged.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has also warned that more rain is expected in the coming days. They have encouraged families in affected areas to seek shelter with relatives, in government-provided temporary shelters, or in safer locations until the situation improves.
“Safety first. Your life matters more than your belongings,” LASEMA said in a statement.
The government is working with drainage experts and local councils to reduce the flooding impact, but citizens are advised to avoid dumping waste into drainage channels and to report blocked gutters.
