The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office, has conducted an assessment of flood-affected areas in Apapa Local Government Area after heavy rainfall submerged several communities, destroying homes, shops, schools, and infrastructure.
The exercise, carried out on Friday, August 22, 2025, covered Wards E to J, with NEMA officials working alongside local leaders in communities such as Ladejobi, Arewa, Ojora, Baale Street, Oke-Oja, Church Street, Zion Street, and Adeleye.
In a statement released on Monday via its official X handle, NEMA said the mission focused on evaluating the extent of damage, identifying causes of the flooding, documenting affected persons and structures, and sensitising residents about the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NIMET) weather alerts.
Poor Waste Disposal Blamed
Findings from the assessment revealed that blocked drainage channels, largely caused by indiscriminate waste disposal and poor drainage systems, were the major triggers of the flood. Overflowing stormwater left entire communities submerged, cutting off roads and bridges and damaging public facilities.
Health Risks Highlighted
Assistant Director and Head of Search and Rescue at NEMA, Adenike Ibitayo, who led the assessment team, raised concerns about the public health risks of the flooding.
“Flooding in these communities not only disrupts livelihoods but also increases the risk of waterborne diseases and infections due to poor waste management,” she cautioned.
Residents Advised to Stay Vigilant
With many households still reeling from their losses, the agency urged residents to remain alert, warning that more heavy rains are expected.
“Residents of Apapa LGA are strongly advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their lives and property,” NEMA stated.
