The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
The announcement was made in Abuja on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who congratulated Nigerians at home and in the diaspora. He urged citizens to embrace unity, patriotism, and resilience, describing them as values that have sustained the nation since independence in 1960.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said provides a roadmap for economic revival, national rebirth, and shared prosperity.
At a pre-Independence press briefing, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said this year’s celebrations will be modest with the theme: All Hands Must Be on Deck.
According to him, the events began with Jummat prayers on Friday and a thanksgiving service on Sunday. He noted that the highlight of the anniversary will be the unveiling of the National Value Charter by the National Orientation Agency (NOA).
Idris explained that the charter aims to promote national pride and responsible citizenship by outlining what citizens can expect from the government and the obligations expected from them in return.
Both ministers stressed that the significance of the 65th Independence Anniversary lies not in elaborate ceremonies but in the collective determination of Nigerians to work together for peace, unity, and development.
