The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has issued a statement clarifying an incident involving cargo charges at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
This was revealed in a statement signed by the FAAN’S Director of Public affairs and Consumer Protection,Mrs Obiageli Orah on the 7th of October Obtained by Timely Publishers, clarified the viral video.
The authority had responded to a viral video depicting a disagreement between FAAN staff and a cargo agent at the MMIA Terminal, which had led to claims of misconduct and bribery.
According to the statement, “We would like to clarify that there was no form of molestation by FAAN staff, neither was there any request for a bribe during the incident. This was simply an act of blackmail. Our staff was simply ensuring that the correct levy was paid,
Also, “The individual in question was not a passenger but a cargo agent attempting to avoid paying the required fees for cargo handling. The authority revealed that the agent engaged in illegal operations and, upon refusing to pay the stipulated charges, caused damage to airport equipment as no member of staff requested a bribe or engaged in any form of molestation,as this is an act of blackmail”.
FAAN reiterated its commitment to maintaining proper cargo handling procedures, urging cargo agents and the general public to comply with regulations. The authority emphasised that all cargo operations must be conducted in designated cargo areas, using proper vehicles and personnel, and that relevant charges must be paid.
The organisation also reminded agents of the penalty for non-compliance, including a fine of ₦5,000 for infractions such as failing to use designated cargo terminals and damaging carousels due to improper handling.
“We advise the public to adhere to the rules guiding airport operations to avoid similar incidents in the future. By working together, we can ensure a safe and efficient airport experience for all.”
FAAN further affirmed its commitment to upholding international best practices to protect airport facilities and ensure customer safety.
