Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has called on the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to audit the state’s financial records as part of efforts to entrench transparency, address discrepancies, and strengthen fiscal discipline.
Bago made the announcement in Minna while declaring open the 20th Northern Zone Accountants’ Conference, themed “Accountability and National Re-orientation: Unlocking Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Potentials.”
According to the governor, the decision to invite ICAN was aimed at setting a model for other states, stressing that accountability and prudent management of resources remain the bedrock of good governance and sustainable economic growth.
“The theme of this conference is timely and reflects the realities of our nation. Accountability, rebuilding trust, fostering national values, and stimulating economic growth are imperatives we must pursue relentlessly,” Bago stated.
He further reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening institutions of accountability and urged participants at the conference to come up with actionable recommendations that could help restore public confidence and build resilient systems of governance across the country.
In his remarks, ICAN President, Malam Haruna Yahaya, welcomed the partnership, assuring that the institute would conduct the audit independently and professionally.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris represented by the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Jibrin Baba-Ndace noted that the conference theme aligned with the national agenda of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. He emphasized that accountability is central to building a thriving society and urged all Nigerians to see it as a shared responsibility.
