Acting COAS Orders Investigation into Alleged Brutality by Nigerian Army Personnel

The Nigerian Army (NA) has responded to a viral audio-visual recording circulating on social media, which allegedly showed a senior Army officer and two other soldiers involved in an altercation with a man and a woman in the Abuja metropolis.

The incident, which has raised concerns online, is covered in uncertainty, with the full circumstances of the altercation yet to be clarified. In light of the disturbing footage, the Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered an immediate investigation to ascertain the truth surrounding the incident.

In a statement issued on 19 November 2024, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, assured the public that the Nigerian Army is committed to upholding the Constitution and protecting the rights of all law-abiding Nigerians. He further stated that the investigation would be conducted with due diligence to ensure that the matter is properly addressed.

“The Nigerian Army remains steadfast in its commitment to serve and protect the Nigerian people, and we assure the public that all necessary steps will be taken to reach a logical conclusion on this matter,” Major General Nwachukwu said.

The Army has urged the public to remain calm as the investigation progresses.
