A devastating two-storey building collapse occurred on Modupeola Street, Mangoro, in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State, on Wednesday evening. The incident, which happened around 6 pm, resulted in six people being rescued, including a trapped victim who sustained injuries.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) and other first responders quickly arrived at the scene, rescuing six people from the rubble. According to Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, the responders acted swiftly, saving lives. Five of the rescued victims were taken to a nearby private hospital, while the trapped victim, a 44-year-old man, was rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) with fractures and bruises.
The trapped victim, who lives at 10 Olabode Street, Alimosho, arrived at LASUTH in stable condition and was immediately admitted for further treatment. Omotoso confirmed that the victim received prompt medical attention, and his condition is currently stable.
This latest incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement of building regulations in Lagos, which has been grappling with frequent cases of building collapse. The state government has ordered a full-scale investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent future occurrences. In July, a similar incident occurred along Adeniji-Adele Road in the Isale Eko area, where four people narrowly escaped death after a three-storey building collapsed.
The cause of the collapse is still unknown, but authorities are working to determine the reason behind the devastating incident. With building collapses becoming increasingly common in Lagos, citizens are demanding stricter regulations and better enforcement to prevent such tragedies.
