History was made at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) on Thursday, September 18, 2025, as the institution hosted its first-ever retirement celebration, honouring 59 staff members who concluded their service between 2022 and 2025.
The unprecedented event, held at the university podium, drew emotions from honourees and attendees alike, with many describing it as a moment of pride and dignity for those who helped build both LASUSTECH and its legacy institution, LASPOTECH.
For several retirees, the ceremony was more than just a send-off, it was recognition long overdue. Retired Chief Lecturer and former Governing Council member, Mr. Olasunkanmi Longe, captured the mood when he said, “This unprecedented gesture, being the first of its kind in the history of the Institution, has not only dignified our exit but has also set a noble precedent and enduring legacy for future occasions.”
Beyond the symbolism of closure, the event highlighted the university’s evolving culture of appreciation. Certificates of meritorious service were presented to the honourees, acknowledging decades of contribution to teaching, research, administration, and institutional growth.
While representing Vice-Chancellor Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Abiodun Denloye, stressed the importance of institutional memory, noting that LASUSTECH’s present stability rests on the sacrifices of those being celebrated.
The human angle of the event was reinforced by the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), represented by Mrs. Morenike Makinde, who assured retirees of government’s continued commitment to their welfare and encouraged them to embrace post-service opportunities.
Registrar Mr. David Ogungbe closed the ceremony by commending the retirees’ loyalty and contributions, emphasising that they had laid a solid foundation upon which the institution must continue to build.
The retirees, 36 academic and 23 non-academic staff, leave behind a combined legacy of service that shaped both LASPOTECH’s transformation and LASUSTECH’s current trajectory.
