Veteran journalist and communication expert, Mr. Ibrahim Fatoyinbo, has warned student leaders against allowing unionism to derail their academic goals, stressing that the ultimate goal of being in school is to graduate with excellence.
Fatoyinbo gave the advice on Friday while speaking as a guest speaker at a virtual webinar themed “Balancing Academics with Unionism,” hosted by LASUSTECH student, Bisiriyu Hassan Taiwo.
“Student unionism without a certificate is a waste,” he said. “You need to balance the struggle with your books. Don’t let activism rob you of your future.”
Drawing from his experience in journalism and years of mentoring young leaders, Fatoyinbo said leadership is more effective when built on academic credibility and strong character.
“If your voice is loud on campus but your results are poor, you’re only deceiving yourself. Lead with responsibility, and make your academics a top priority,” he emphasized.
He encouraged student leaders to learn the art of time management, task delegation, and self-discipline, noting that these qualities will serve them well beyond the university.
“Unionism is a training ground, not a battleground. It should shape you, not scatter you,” he added.
Fatoyinbo further advised that leaders should seek mentorship and improve their capacity through books, media literacy, and exposure to digital tools relevant to leadership and advocacy.
“You can’t afford to be a digital illiterate in today’s world. Read, research, and reflect. The more you know, the better you lead.”
The webinar, which attracted student union leaders and aspiring leaders from Lagos State-based institutions, was part of an initiative to raise responsible student leaders who can balance activism with academic excellence.
