Two construction workers have been rescued four days after being trapped beneath the debris of a collapsed building in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State.
The three-storey building, located at 333 Borno Way, Alagomeji, collapsed at about 7:46 p.m. on Friday, sparking an extensive search and rescue operation led by emergency agencies.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in its Day 2 incident report on Saturday, confirmed the recovery of one male body from the rubble as efforts continued to locate other trapped victims.
Providing an update on Monday, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), revealed that four fatalities have now been recorded, while six people were rescued alive.
“As of this morning, we have successfully rescued six individuals. Two of them were brought out alive at about 11 a.m. today,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
He added that the rescued victims were immediately rushed to a government hospital, where they are receiving free emergency treatment.
“This is a tragic incident, and we sympathise deeply with the families of those who lost their lives. We recovered four bodies during the operation,” he said.
Search teams, including officials from LASEMA, NEMA, the fire service, and other first responders, remain on site, combing through the debris to ensure no victim is left behind.
The incident has renewed public concern about building safety standards in Lagos, a city that has witnessed several building collapses in recent years. Authorities have vowed to investigate the cause of the disaster and hold those responsible accountable.
