Thunderstorm Snaps TCN Power Line in Otukpo, Destroys Property and Livestock

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that a severe thunderstorm on the evening of September 3, 2025, led to the snapping of the 132kV Otukpo Nsukka, New Haven transmission line.

In a statement issued by the General Manager, Public Affairs, the company said the damaged conductor fell to the ground near Tower 97 along the transmission route. While there was no loss of human life, the high-voltage discharge from the fallen line resulted in significant damage: a house located directly under the transmission line was set ablaze, a parked car was burnt, and two cows were electrocuted.

The TCN’s Enugu Regional Manager, Engr. Tom Inugonum, along with his technical team, promptly visited the site for an on-the-ground assessment of the incident. TCN reiterated its commitment to public safety and grid stability, urging Nigerians to respect the right-of-way of power infrastructure and adhere to safety guidelines.

“The public is strongly advised to avoid building or conducting activities under high-voltage transmission lines,” the statement read.
