The convoy of former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), was on Monday attacked by suspected hoodlums in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital.
Malami, who resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on July 2 before joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), was said to be returning from a condolence visit when the attack occurred around the GRA area of the city.
Speaking after an emergency security meeting with security chiefs, the Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, confirmed the incident but disclosed that no arrest had been made.
“We have commenced investigation into the attack, and no arrest has been made yet. The governor convened this meeting to review security developments,” Sani said.
According to him, the clash involved rival political party members and was linked to breaches of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) campaign regulations. He added that leaders of political parties would be summoned and cautioned against further violations of electoral guidelines.
The police commissioner assured that security measures had been put in place to prevent further violence ahead of the elections. He urged political leaders in the state to remain calm and work towards sustaining peace and stability.
