Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on the Federal Government to ensure that the recent revenue growth figures announced by authorities translate into real and measurable benefits for ordinary Nigerians.
Obi, in a statement on Tuesday, cautioned against celebrating economic gains without addressing the everyday realities of citizens. He stressed that improvements in national revenue should lead to visible progress in critical areas such as education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.
“It is not enough to announce revenue growth. The real question is: where is the impact? Are our schools better equipped? Are our hospitals functioning? Are Nigerians feeling the difference?” Obi asked.
The former Anambra State governor urged the government to use the reported revenue surplus wisely, calling for immediate investments in sectors that directly affect the well-being of citizens. He advised against excessive borrowing and urged the administration to clear outstanding debts owed to contractors to stimulate economic activity.
Obi also called for a transparent framework for allocating surplus revenue, with a focus on improving human capital and infrastructure.
“With just four months left in the year, there’s still time to make meaningful changes. The government must channel excess funds into education, healthcare, and programs that lift people out of poverty,” he added.
His remarks come amid growing public concerns that official economic data does not align with the lived experiences of many Nigerians, who continue to grapple with rising inflation, unemployment, and declining living standards.
Obi concluded by emphasizing that genuine economic stability should be felt across classrooms, hospitals, and homes—not just in government reports or press conferences.
