Edo State Governor, Mr. Monday Okpebholo, has taken a bold and forward-thinking step to uplift the quality of manpower in the state’s Civil and Public Service by approving automatic employment for first-class graduates from Nigerian and foreign universities.
This initiative, announced by the state’s Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa, signals a strategic move to attract top-tier talent and reinvigorate the public service system for enhanced efficiency and productivity.
The Graduate Development Programme, as it is called, seeks not only to integrate exceptional graduates into the system but also to foster a culture of excellence and innovation in service delivery. Okungbowa elaborated on the governor’s vision, stating, “The governor has approved this initiative to motivate workers and encourage them to give their best.
The Graduate Development Programme is designed to bring together first-class graduates and those with high-grade degrees to develop and enhance the quality of manpower within the service.”
In addition to providing employment opportunities, this programme reflects the administration’s commitment to retaining high-caliber professionals, addressing a longstanding challenge of talent attrition in the state. Governor Okpebholo recognizes that securing and keeping skilled workers is essential for long-term growth and sustainability in governance.
To maximize the impact of this initiative, the programme will initially target first-class graduates of Edo origin from the 2020 academic year onwards, with the potential for future expansion. Successful candidates will undergo a rotational deployment across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, ensuring they gain a diverse understanding of the public service system. Beyond this, there are plans to place participants in the private sector, providing them with broader exposure and insights to bridge public and private sector efficiency.
The experience gained through these rotations is expected to translate into innovative practices that will strengthen Edo State’s public administration and foster economic development.
Governor Okpebholo has urged all eligible first-class graduates of Edo State origin, whether educated within Nigeria or abroad, to seize this unique opportunity. This policy underscores his administration’s vision of creating a workforce characterized by excellence and professionalism, ultimately contributing to the transformation of Edo State into a hub of innovation and exemplary governance. By prioritizing the recruitment of top academic achievers, the state government is setting a precedent for other states to emulate, emphasizing the importance of human capital as a critical driver of sustainable development.
