Newlywed Couple Narrowly Escapes Death in Lagos Accident

A newlywed couple’s joyful day took a harrowing turn as they narrowly escaped death in a devastating accident on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. The incident occurred near Ilaje on Saturday, shortly after they left the Ikoyi Marriage Registry. Fortunately, the couple was among the 18 individuals rescued by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and emergency responders.The accident involved a mini truck (AGL 22 YE) and a commercial LT bus (BFG 204 XF). According to LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the LT bus suffered brake failure while traveling at high speed, colliding with the truck, which had mechanical issues and was moving slowly. The impact left 16 passengers seated at the rear of the LT bus severely injured, including 11 women and 5 men.Emergency response teams swiftly sprang into action, evacuating the injured to medical facilities. MOST victims were taken to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre, while those with severe fractures were rushed to Gbagada General Hospital for specialized care. The prompt response ensured no fatalities.LASTMA’s General Manager expressed sympathy for the victims, emphasizing the importance of adhering to speed limits and ensuring proper vehicle maintenance. He highlighted LASTMA’s ongoing public awareness campaigns on road safety, particularly targeting commercial drivers during the festive season.
