At least six more deaths have been confirmed following the fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, a six-storey commercial building located on Broad Street, Lagos Island.
The latest casualties were employees of United Capital, a financial and investment services firm operating from the 3rd and 4th floors of the tower.
This update comes just hours after the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) announced the loss of four staff members in the same incident on Wednesday evening.
According to reports by The PUNCH, the fire, which allegedly began in the inverter room in the basement at about 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, quickly spread, releasing thick smoke that engulfed several floors.
Witnesses recounted moments of chaos as occupants struggled to escape, with some attempting to jump through windows to safety. Emergency responders worked frantically to put out the flames and rescue those trapped inside.
Authorities are yet to release an official tally of the total number of victims, while investigations into the cause of the fire and the extent of structural damage to Afriland Towers are ongoing.
