The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is currently grappling with an internal power struggle as the 2027 general elections draw near.
The conflict is fueled by the presidential ambitions of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Anonymous sources within the ADC have revealed that Atiku is allegedly financing efforts to take control of the party’s structure. It is reported that many of the party’s state chapters and its national leadership are now aligned with him.
This move has reportedly led to the marginalization of Peter Obi and his supporters, known as the Obidient Movement. The movement has expressed its displeasure over being excluded from key decision-making processes within the party, with their concerns highlighted in a leaked memo.
In response to these developments, the ADC’s interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, has denied that Atiku has taken over the party. He has emphasized the party’s commitment to a united front against President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, other sources insist that Atiku’s camp has already secured over 70% of the party’s structure and that other political figures, such as Rotimi Amaechi, are also interested in the 2027 presidency.
Meanwhile, the APC, through its Director of Publicity, has described the ADC coalition as a “marriage of strange bedfellows” that lacks the unity to challenge the ruling party.
The leadership of the ADC, however, maintains that it will provide a level playing field for all aspirants and is currently focused on party-building rather than discussing presidential candidacies.
