Six persons were rescued on Wednesday after a two-storey building collapsed on Modupeola Street, Mangoro, in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The incident, which occurred around 6 p.m., came barely two weeks after four people lost their lives in a three-storey building collapse at No. 325 Bornu Street, Ebute Meta.
Confirming the development, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said in a statement on his Instagram page that operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) and other first responders quickly arrived at the scene.
“A two-storey building has collapsed at 4, Modupeola Street, Mangoro bus stop, Alimosho. The cause of the incident, which occurred around 6 p.m., was not immediately known. Government officials have launched a probe into the incident,” Omotoso stated.
According to him, six people were rescued from the rubble. Five of the victims were taken to a nearby private hospital, while the sixth victim who sustained a fracture and bruises was transported by the Lagos State Ambulance Service to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital’s surgical emergency unit.
“The 44-year-old patient arrived at the hospital in stable condition and was admitted for further treatment. He lives at 10, Olabode Street, Alimosho,” Omotoso added.
The latest collapse has intensified calls for stricter enforcement of building regulations as Lagos continues to grapple with recurring cases of structural failure. In July, four people narrowly escaped death when a three-storey building collapsed on Adeniji-Adele Road, Isale Eko.
