Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to take part in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), describing the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) as the most powerful tool for building a better future and strengthening democracy.
In a message shared via his official X handle on Monday, Obi called the PVC “the voice of the voiceless, the shield of the weak, and the weapon of the poor against injustice and bad leadership.” He appealed particularly to young Nigerians not to underestimate the power of their vote.
“The future of our dear nation is in your hands,” Obi said. “The greatest strength of democracy is in the voter’s card. Your vote counts—if it doesn’t, they wouldn’t be desperately buying it.”
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, cautioned against vote selling, stressing that it only empowers corrupt politicians to plunder public resources. He noted that vote buying is not an act of generosity but a calculated investment by the corrupt to retain power.
“Those who sell their votes mortgage their future and that of their children,” he warned. “They deny themselves access to quality education, healthcare, and job opportunities.”
He further urged Nigerians to remain vigilant during elections, reject manipulation, and organize at the grassroots level to prevent rigging. According to him, a new Nigeria is only possible if voters choose leaders with competence, character, capacity, and compassion.
Reiterating his consistent message, Obi said: “Our democracy is at stake. Let us stand together and prove that Nigeria belongs to the people, not to those who trade our future for selfish gain. A new Nigeria is possible.”
