The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has clamped down on 22 unaccredited Colleges of Education operating across the country.
According to the commission, the institutions were discovered and closed during its recent nationwide enforcement exercise targeted at illegal tertiary institutions. The NCCE disclosed this in its record of recent achievements.
“In line with its mandate, the commission identified and sealed off 22 illegal Colleges of Education nationwide. We also carried out a personnel audit and financial monitoring across all 21 federal colleges of education,” the statement noted.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier charged the NCCE, alongside the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), to intensify efforts in eliminating unapproved higher institutions.
Speaking at the 14th Convocation Ceremony of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in Abuja, where he was represented by Rakiya Ilyasu, Director of University Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Tinubu condemned the activities of what he described as “certificate mills” damaging the credibility of Nigeria’s education system.
He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to strengthen collaboration among education regulatory bodies for improved efficiency and quality assurance.
“The NYSC, JAMB, NUC, NBTE and NCCE are working together to safeguard the integrity of our academic system and ensure that forged certificates or unrecognised institutions, whether in Nigeria or abroad, are completely eradicated,” the President assured.
