The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to stage a nationwide protest on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, across university campuses to register its frustration with the Federal Government’s handling of issues affecting lecturers.
The decision was made public in a statement released on the union’s official Facebook page on Saturday. ASUU said the protest is aimed at drawing attention to government’s persistent failure to address agreements reached with the union.
“Tuesday, 26th August 2025, has been declared a day of protest across all campuses to express our strong dissatisfaction with the government’s persistent neglect of our demands,” the statement noted.
ASUU National President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, had earlier in an August 8 press briefing, appealed to both federal and state governments to prioritise lecturers’ welfare by paying outstanding arrears and improving conditions in public universities.
The union criticised the government for reneging on commitments dating back to 2009, particularly on funding, university autonomy, and staff welfare. It also accused authorities of engaging in empty rhetoric instead of meaningful dialogue, while lecturers continue to grapple with unpaid salaries, poor research infrastructure, and demoralising work environments.
ASUU warned that continued neglect could plunge the university system into another major crisis, stressing that many academics are already being pushed into economic hardship and disillusionment.
