FG Appoints KWAM 1 as Aviation Security Ambassador After Airport Incident

The Federal Government has appointed Fuji music legend, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for proper airport security protocols following a recent controversy at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the decision on Wednesday, stating that the move is part of broader efforts to address incidents of unruly behavior in Nigerian airports.

According to the minister, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has reviewed the sanctions imposed on the artiste, reducing his flight ban from six months to one month. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will now collaborate with KWAM 1 to promote public awareness on acceptable conduct within airport premises.

“FAAN will work closely with the music star to engage him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol. Given his public expression of remorse, the NCAA will also withdraw its earlier criminal complaint lodged with the police,” Keyamo said.

The development follows appeals from notable Nigerians and KWAM 1’s public apology over the August 5 incident. The musician maintained that the flask he carried that day contained water for medical purposes and not alcohol, contrary to earlier claims by security officials.

Keyamo stressed that the clemency was granted on compassionate grounds but reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enforcing aviation safety and security regulations.

The August 5 altercation reportedly began when KWAM 1 clashed with airline staff and security personnel while attempting to board a ValueJet flight to Lagos. He was accused of carrying a prohibited flask, spilling its contents on staff, and entering the tarmac to obstruct the aircraft’s movement.

The NCAA initially described the act as a breach of aviation safety rules, imposing a six-month no-fly ban and filing a criminal complaint.

With the revised decision, KWAM 1 is expected to use his platform and influence to advocate for strict compliance with airport security guidelines across the country.
