The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of two brothers, Samuel Adedeji Adeboye and Charles Adedamola Adeboye, along with 33 others, for their involvement in internet fraud. The convictions were delivered by Justices Ladiran Akintola, Bayo Taiwo, and O.S. Adeyemi of the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan.
The convicted individuals faced various charges, including impersonation, obtaining by false pretence, possession of fraudulent documents, and retention of proceeds from criminal activities.
Samuel Adedeji Adeboye was convicted for impersonating a foreign national to defraud a victim, while his brother, Charles Adedamola Adeboye, was found guilty of aiding internet fraudsters by receiving illicit funds. Samuel was sentenced to one year in prison, with an option of a N100,000 fine, while Charles was sentenced to one year with an option of a N30,000 fine.
The remaining 33 defendants, including Oluwadamilola Michael Omotayo, Boluwatife Ajewole Alaran, and Michael Damilare Badaru, were convicted on separate one-count charges. Sentences ranged from imprisonment to community service, with some granted the option of fines.
Justice Akintola sentenced 18 convicts to one year in prison, with fines ranging from N50,000 to N500,000. Four other convicts, identified as Oluwafemi, Prosper, Wellington, and Adedayo, were given six-month sentences, with options for fines or community service. Several others were ordered to perform community service without the option of a fine.
Justice Taiwo sentenced Abdulazeez Taiwo Adisa to five months in prison or a N150,000 fine, while Justice Adeyemi sentenced Ayobami to one year of community service.
In addition to the sentences, the court ordered the forfeiture of several luxury items, including four Lexus cars, two Toyota Camry cars, a Mercedes Benz, and an Acura, all deemed to be proceeds of fraudulent activities. These items are to be handed over to the federal government.
The convictions highlight the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime and bring internet fraudsters to justice.
