Former Governor of Rivers State and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, vowing not to step down for any candidate within the party.
Speaking to journalists in Kano on Wednesday, Amaechi made it clear that he would participate in the ADC presidential primary and is fully committed to seeing his ambition through.
“I will contest the ADC presidential primary, and by God’s grace, I hope to win so that I can face Tinubu in 2027,” he said. “There is no retreat, no surrender. I am not stepping down for anyone. Let the people decide who they want to lead.”
The former Minister of Transportation also stressed the need for internal democracy within the party, insisting that the primaries must be transparent, fair, and open to all qualified aspirants.
Amaechi’s declaration is seen as a bold move within political circles, especially as the race toward 2027 intensifies. His comments come amid speculations of realignments and fresh rivalries among opposition parties seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.
He called on the ADC to provide a level playing field for all contenders, noting that only a credible process would earn the party the trust of Nigerians.
Amaechi served as Rivers State governor from 2007 to 2015 and later as Minister of Transportation under President Muhammadu Buhari. His latest political move marks a return to the national spotlight after months of political silence.
Observers believe his presidential ambition under the ADC platform could reshape the opposition’s dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections.
